This Friday the varsity football team will travel to Manchester to face the Panthers for the first time since the two schools met in the 1998 state playoffs. That game was played at Canton’s Fawcett Stadium with the Red Riders winning 17-8 on their way to their first ever state championship.
This will be the Riders first visit to Manchester since the 1988 season. At that time the Riders and Panthers were part of the All-Ohio League (1983-88). Prior to that the Riders and Panthers were part of the All-Ohio Conference from 1976-1982. Now that both teams are in the PAC, this old rivalry will get new life. All-time the Riders hold a 14-2-1 edge in the series with Manchester.
The Panthers and Riders come into this game with identical 3-3 records. The Panthers have won 3 in a row after starting the season 0-3 and have sole possession of 1st place in the PAC (3-0). They are coming off a convincing 41-6 win over Tusky Valley last week. The Riders had their 2-game win streak snapped last week with a 29-12 loss to Indian Valley. The Riders are tied with Indian Valley and Tuslaw for 2nd place with a 2-1 PAC record.
Playoff and PAC Picture
This game will have major playoff & league title implications for both teams. Currently both teams sit outside of the top 8 in their respective regions with Manchester 13th in Region 17 and Orrville 11th in Region 18. A win by either team would substantially improve their chances at a PAC title and a playoff berth.
Grass vs Turf
This will be the Riders first game all season on natural grass. They will play 1 more game the rest of the season on grass (week 8 at Fairless).
