Only five points separated the top three teams at the 37th Annual Chippewa Invitational Tournament. Orrville finished third with 126.5 points behind Highland (131.5) and Buckeye (127.5). Three wrestlers went undefeated in the two-day tournament, including senior Tyler Elkins (132#) going 6-0, freshman Austin Warrick (145) going 7-0, and junior Sam Auble (220) finishing with a 5-0 record. Elkins, Warrick and Auble became tournament champions in their respective weight classes when each earned pins against their opponents.
Junior Cameron Van Brunt (170) also finished as tourney champ with a 20-13 decision over Jackson in a high-energy match that had most of the crowd on its feet! Van Brunt’s record for the tournament was 7-1. Also making it to the podium was senior Kyle Corfman (6-2 record) at 126# with a win over Highland, earning himself a third place medal. Freshman Wyatt Zimmerman, whose record was 6-3 this weekend, earned a fourth place finish in a close finals match against Buckeye.
The Riders could not have scored as high as they did in the team rankings without the help of the rest of the team wrestling this weekend. The hard work each individual puts in on the mat doesn’t always show up as an individual reward and isn’t always reflected in the records. But, the hard work does show up in the final team score and this tournament is a true testament to the teamwork the Riders share for the good of the whole team. Rounding out the roster for this tournament were Matt Mendiola (120#), Mike Ball (138), Cole Davis (145), Alex Eddy (152), Graisen Barnhill (152), and Lucas Lehtomaki (182).
Congratulations to all of the Red Rider wrestlers and coaches!
