It was a good day for Orrville as the team competed in the 2018 OHSAA Division III Northeast Sectional Wrestling Tournament at Northwestern High School on February 24th. Orrville finished fourth overall as a team, out of 13 teams, with 150 points, just behind Smithville (154). Waynedale ran away with first place, scoring 225 points, with Loundonville in second (160.5). In order to advance individually on to the District tournament, wrestlers needed to finish in the top four spots at Sectionals. Orrville has six athletes moving on to the next level.
Freshman Cory Stiffler (126#) finished strong in his debut at Sectionals by pinning his opponent in the championship match, earning Sectional Champion status and a chance to keep working toward a trip to State. Kollen Butler (132#) also made it to the championship round, but was injured in the first period and had to concede his match. It is hoped that he will be ready to compete at Districts. Austin Shaffer (138#), a senior who had taken his junior year off of wrestling, made an impressive fight to a fourth-place finish, making it to Districts for a second time in his career as he also qualified as a freshman. Sophomore Wyatt Zimmerman (145#) earned a second-place finish, and his second trip to the District tournament in as many years. Cameron VanBrunt, at 182# pinned his foe for a 3rd place finish. Cam is making his third trip in a row to Districts. Rounding out the roster for Orrville is senior Sam Auble (220#) who also won a Sectional Championship and a second trip to Districts. Orrville also has two alternates who could have a chance to keep their post-season alive. Freshman Jac Crabtree (106#) pinned his opponent to earn a fifth-place finish, and sophomore Coddie Phillips won his match at 285# to finish fifth.
Best of luck to all of the Rider wrestlers and coaches as they head to Districts at Garfield Heights High School on Friday, March 2nd and Saturday, March 3rd.
