Orrville Girl’s Tennis Team Shines At Sectional Championships
The Orrville High School girl’s tennis team continued its successful seasoon by winning both the singles and doubles championships at the Division II Jackson Sectional tournament.
In singles, Junior Claudia Adcock played her semi-final match against the #4 seed Abigail Franks of Canton South. Adcock won 6-4, 6-2. This set up the championship match that featured Claudia Adcock (#1 seed) vs. Destiny Winans (#2 seed) of Canton South matching up. After trailing 5-2 in the first set Adcock came back to win a 7-6 tiebreaker and then fell behind in the 2nd set 4-3 before winning the final three games to win at 6-4.
Coach Kent Smith said “This was truly a match with so many momentum swings neither player could ever be too comfortable. The biggest thing was Claudia really kept her cool. It didn’t matter what happened she found a way to hang in there. There are not many players that would be down 5-2 to that quality of a player and be able to come back and win. A lot of credit goes to Claudia for her perseverance.”
In doubles, the senior tandom of identical twins Abby Adcock and Sydney Accock finished as Sectional champs by not dropping a set in the tournament. In the semi-final match they defeated Emily Le & Brooke Esterle of Manchester 6-1, 6-2. Then in the championship they defeated the #2 seed of Emily Allison & Kirsten McAllister of Triway
Coach Kent Smith commented “Abby & Sydney have been waiting to play this tournament all year and they didn’t disappoint. They complement each other’s game very nicely and the chemistry is there to pick each other up. I believe their best tennis is still to come.”
The Division II District tournament will be held next Friday and Saturday at the Springside Racket Club in Fairlawn. The draw won’t be posted until Monday, but play will begin at 9:00 a.m.
